On February 13, 2019 The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued an alert to ensure that patients have access to laboratory testing in response to the threat of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). CMS issued a new HCPCS code (U0001). This new code is for labs utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2019 Novel Coronavirus Real Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Test Panel and will allow labs to bill insurance carriers for the specific test as opposed to using a miscellaneous code.
On March 3, 2019 The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid issued a second HCPCS Code (U0002) to describe 2019-nCoV Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2/2019-nCoV (COVID-19) using any technique, multiple types or subtypes (includes all targets).
