Google’s AI System Focuses on Healthcare

In late March of 2022, Google announced that a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) program is focused on the treatment of cardiovascular conditions and the improvement of maternal health. Previously, Google created an AI system called ARDA that supports diabetic retinopathy screenings. This system is able to screen up to 350 patients daily and its accuracy has been confirmed during a national screening program in Thailand. Another previously created Google AI feature allows for the recording and analysis of heart activity with a smart phone. Now, researchers are working to confirm whether or not built-in-microphones are able to record heart sounds when placed on the chest. If so, this could be used to detect some heart valve disorders.
Google and Northwestern Medicine are using their partnership to also focus on maternal health. Studies will be conducted that will help to validate the use of smart phones in conducting ultrasounds and other maternal assessments. Other previous Google AI tools include the ability to take pictures of skin, nails, and hair and evaluate their appearance for possible skin disorders by comparing them to the 288 different conditions on the algorithm. Google AI has also been created for the planning of radiotherapy treatments.
Google also announced that they are enhancing its search engine by adding information about available medical appointments. As the updates roll out, the search function will allow patients to view available appointment times for participating providers. The decision to enhance the search engine comes after recent data found that patients will search for health information on an average of three website, with Google being one of them. So far, there is no release date; however, Chief Health Officer, Karen DeSalvo’s full statement can be read here.
