Medical Billing and Coding Healthcare Blog

While there were many important issues covered during the first full day of the Lab Institute 2015 meeting, one in particular was receiving substantial attention and discussion.

PAMA, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014, requires labs to report payments from other carriers to Medicare in 2016. The data will ultimately be used to set fees in 2017.

Noncompliance with this requirement could result in significant penalties, but there is no information presently available on how to report payments. Labs will need software capable of producing the data in the required format.

Fortunately for PGM clients, we already record this data in several ways, including by carrier, by CPT, by referring provider and others. We will have the flexibility to meet format requirements when they are eventually defined.
